Wifeys + Gentlemen,
It’s no secret that in the world of dating, there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. While many of us are on the prowl for our one and only, I’ve noticed an emergence of singles who have opted to date more than one person at a time.
Believe me when I say, this dating style is NOT for everyone. Dating multiple people can be exciting, adventurous, and extremely advantageous depending on your preferences and needs.
Still, it comes with its own unique set of challenges that send some daters running for the hills!
If you’re wondering if dating multiple people is the right choice for you, look no further! I’m going to break down the highs and lows of this dating tactic, as honestly and realistically as I can.
So What’s Good?
You will (likely) get a HUGE confidence boost!
When you are dating multiple people, it can make you feel more desirable and confident. Knowing that you have options can help you feel more secure in yourself and less worried about the outcome of any one particular date or union.
From personal experience, I can attest that there is NOTHING more reassuring than feeling like you have little (if anything) to lose on a first date. You are there for the encounter; you are looking for adventure and if things don’t work out or you know that more is possible.
*don’t let this level of newfound confidence and choice keep you from being smart! It’s STILL important to vet and get to know anyone you’re dating. Meet new people in public places and make safe, selfish decisions for your own protection and peace.
You get to explore different connections & learn about yourself.
Dating multiple people allows you to explore different connections with different individuals. This can be especially helpful if you are still figuring out what you want in a relationship or if you are looking for something specific.
One thing I love about dating multiple people is the ability to explore different versions of yourself, romantically. Some daters like to keep a variety of people on their roster, helping them better understand their “type” or allowing them to learn what feels most natural or fits best.
You can avoid getting too attached too soon
Are you someone who tends to fall in love quickly? Do you chase to dopamine high of a new relationship and have a hard time taking things slow? Dating multiple people can help you avoid getting too attached to any one person too quickly.
Say it with me folks: I NEED EMOTIONAL SPACE. 🗣️
Emotional space is important as it helps you to evaluate your feelings and assess whether or not you want to pursue a deeper connection. It’s up to you how many “deep” relationships you’re willing to entertain at one time (but that’s another subject for another post…👀).
Alright, So What’s the Catch?
You might experience some emotional fatigue.
Dating multiple people can be emotionally exhausting, especially if you are juggling multiple schedules and trying to keep everyone happy. Moreover, you are going to be absorbing the energy of others and doing your best to keep your own feelings in check.
Don’t be afraid to take breaks from dating and reclaim your personal space. It is important to have reasonable expectations about how many people you can date while still taking care of yourself and your own needs.
You will likely feel overwhelmed and struggle to find balance.
Keeping track of multiple people can be challenging, especially if you are trying to remember important details about each person. It can also be hard to keep your stories straight and remember what you have or haven’t shared with each person.
This isn’t to suggest that you should lie to anyone or aim to deceive your partners in any capacity. However, some connections will progress quicker than others. Some people will hold space for your vulnerability while others might be slower to open up.
Being transparent with yourself is, in my opinion, just as important as being transparent with your dates. Finding balance is an ongoing task and feelings of anxiety and overwhelm are normal signs to check in with your thoughts.
You will have to deal with jealousy and drama.
Dating multiple people can sometimes lead to craziness of the ratchet and upsetting variety! Again, it’s important to be honest and upfront with everyone involved to avoid hurt feelings and misunderstandings.
Of course, there is a nuance to this as not everyone needs to know all of your business, but you get the idea!
Real talk, dating multiple people can be a fun and exciting way to explore different connections, learn more about yourself and what you want in a relationship, and lead to a world of amazing possibilities. However, it’s important to be honest with yourself and everyone involved about your intentions and to communicate openly and honestly to avoid any chaos (and trust me, even the BEST of communicators will still encounter chaos).
Ultimately, the decision to date multiple people is a personal one that depends on your own preferences and comfort level.
